Lower Back Pain Treatment

Lower Back Pain Treatment

Lumbar / Lower Back Pain Treatment in Hyderabad

Lower back pain is a highly prevalent condition, affecting approximately 80% of adults at some point in their lives.

It is the leading cause of work absenteeism and disability, affecting individuals of all genders, ages, and backgrounds. While it is often mild, there are instances when it becomes severe and intolerable. The onset of lower back pain can be sudden or gradual, and it may be localized to a small area or encompass a broader region. The duration of the pain can range from a few days to several years, making it occasionally challenging to treat effectively.

Lower back pain is typically categorized as acute, which is short-term and lasts from a few days to a few weeks. In most cases, it improves with self-care measures. However, acute lower back pain can also be severe in certain situations.

When the pain lasts between 4 and 12 weeks, it is referred to as subacute lower back pain.

On the other hand, chronic lower back pain persists for three months or longer, even after the initial injury or underlying cause has been addressed. Approximately 20% of individuals who experience acute lower back pain develop chronic symptoms. This indicates that the pain can persist beyond the expected recovery period, and in some cases, it can be challenging to manage and have a debilitating impact on daily life.

Lower Back Pain Symptoms

Typical lower back pain symptoms include:

  • Aching muscles
  • Stabbing or burning pain
  • Pain that stretches down your leg, called sciatica
  • Pain that increases with activity or reduces while laying down

The Many Causes of Lower Back Pain

  • Lower back pain: can be attributed to various causes, which can be identified based on specific symptoms. Some of the most common causes are:
  • Sacroiliitis: Inflammation of the sacroiliac joints that connect the lower spine to the pelvis. It typically causes pain in the buttocks and lower back, which may radiate down the legs. Prolonged standing or climbing stairs often worsens the discomfort.
  • Arthritis: Spinal arthritis, known as spinal stenosis, narrows the space around the spinal cord, leading to irritation and discomfort. Although commonly associated with aging, osteoarthritis can manifest as painful symptoms as early as age 40.
  • Osteoporosis: A condition that weakens bones and causes spinal vertebrae fractures. Osteoporosis usually affects older adults, but it can also result from calcium and vitamin D deficiencies, as well as lack of exercise.
  • Soft tissue strain: Repetitive movements or sudden overexertion can strain muscles or ligaments, commonly referred to as a pulled back. It is the primary cause of isolated soreness, such as lower left or lower right back pain.
  • Herniated discs: The spinal vertebrae are cushioned by discs with a tough outer layer and a soft inner material. A herniation occurs when the outer layer ruptures, causing the inner material to protrude and potentially compress a nerve. This often leads to sciatica, characterized by pain starting in the lower back and radiating through the buttocks and down the leg.
  • Infection: Lower left or lower right back pain can be caused by kidney infection, appendicitis, gynecological issues, or kidney stones.

Other possible causes of lower back pain include lumbar sprain, lumbar slipped disc, lumbar radiculopathy, lumbar muscle spasm, lumbar degenerative disc disease, lumbar bulging disc, and lumbar spine degenerative joint disease.

Chronic lower back pain, on the other hand, persists for three months or longer, even after the initial injury or underlying cause has been treated. Approximately 20% of people who experience acute lower back pain may develop chronic lower back pain. This means that the pain can persist longer than expected, and in some cases, it can be challenging to treat and significantly debilitating.
