Vertebral Compression Fracture Treatment in Hyderabad

A vertebra refers to one of the individual bones comprising the spine. The front portion of each vertebra is known as the vertebral body.

In a person with good health, the vertebral body consists of dense and robust bone. However, it can be susceptible to damage from injuries or weakened due to certain diseases. When the vertebral body fractures or collapses, resulting in compression or squashing, it is referred to as a vertebral compression fracture (VCF).

Symptoms of VCF include:

  • Back pain
  • Curvature of the spine
  • Difficulties with balance, mobility and even breathing
  • Bowel and bladder problems

What are the causes of VCF?

Vertebral compression fractures can stem from various causes, including:

Osteoporosis:
The majority of osteoporotic fractures involve the front (anterior) portion of the vertebral body, resulting in a collapse or compression. Over time, the entire bone may become affected.

Tumors:
When a tumor develops within a vertebra, it can fracture or disrupt any segment of the bone. If the posterior (rear) wall of the vertebral body is weakened or broken, addressing this issue can be more challenging and may carry a higher risk of complications.

Physical Trauma:
Severe physical injuries can lead to the complete crushing of the vertebral body. Additionally, the rear (posterior) parts of the vertebra can be fractured or disrupted. In such cases, open surgical procedures may be necessary to stabilize the spine, often combined with a vertebroplasty procedure to enhance the stability of the affected area.
